BRIGGS LIBARY

PROJECT DESCRIPTION|

CONCEPT |

The focus for this project is to reconsider the Hilton M. Briggs Library by thinking creatively and intentionally about what a forward-thinking library should be, how it should function, and what is scholarly and social learning goals it might serve.

605 guide lines is representative of how the town of Brookings was established alongside the railroad track. Just as the first railroads of America pushed the envelope of technological advancements, and succeeded in social, economic, and political change – the students of SDSU also too try to make that same impact in each of their fields of study. 605 guide lines aims to set guidelines for creating a space that supports all of these areas allowing us to pioneer the future.

Digital wall.png

The digital/interactive wall perspective highlights the curved wall. This was essential to the design because SDSU holds tours of the school my solution makes it easier to pull off to the side and look at different things on campus. This perspective also looks into the 24 hr access area, as well as, individual study areas with digital technology

Library Services.png

The library services perspective features an architectural element that relates back to train bridges. Each vertical element is aligned with bookcases and creates a space within a space. Within this space is a quiet lounge area for waiting or study.

The coffee station perspectives showcase the most critical design element within the space. This element was taken from the concept and enforces the history of the town in which the school is located - Brookings, SD.

Perspective|Coffee Station

Coffeeshope.png

The coffee station provides an area for users to grab a cup of coffee, relax, and communicate with each other. The space features a chalk board wall for workers to change when needed, multiple postures, and a flooring change to push the idea of a train station further.

The North Entrance perspective looks down the long diagonal of the building. It features the Coffee Station as well as a view into more of the building itself.

Open Colab.png

The open collaborative area shows just how much seating fills the space. I wanted to maximize square footage with the multiple seating options for students to choose where to work.

Stairs.png

The staircase perspective reveals how color in the space aids as wayfinding. It also shows how the writing center and the 24 hour access rooms work together. Glass was chosen to maximize daylight and enhance views to SDSU's campus.
