BROOKINGS  DENTAL COMPLEX

PROJECT DESCRIPTION|

CONCEPT |

Over an 8 week time period, our group designed a 17,500 sq ft. complex to house the necessary dental care sectors throughout the stages of life. These included pediatrics (2-18), orthodontics (7-20), general dentistry (20-64) and periodontics (65+).

FRESH is representational of the Brookings Dental complex as a whole. By definition, Fresh is full of energy and vigor. This will be characterized in our space by using bright pops of color, diagonal elements, and exaggerated wayfinding. FRESH can also be dissected into our 5 goals of the space itself Function, Rejuvenation, Elevated, Sustainable, and Harmony.

Brookings Dental Complex |Site + Landscaping

The Brookings Dental Complex is Located on the corner of 8th and South Main. One of our goals was to create a sense of community that gives back to the Brookings area. We did this by adding to the existing bike path and extending round corner features seen further north  to try and bridge the gap between North and South Main. Other Features include a staff patio, bridge, memorial fountain, playground and custom bike/bench seating.

Horticulture was considered when South Dakota native plants were chosen to better adapt to soils, moisture, and weather. They also require less fertilizers & are less likely to become invasive. Native plants also support wildlife by providing food & shelter for native birds & insects.

Did I mention the color palette of the exterior reflects on the interior?

Brookings Dental Complex |Finish Floor Plan

When choosing materiality healthcare, products are analyzed for compliance with the goals relating to budget, patient safety, durability, flexibility, sustainability, VOC emissions, maintenance, and alignment with branding. Aesthetic goals impact the visual branding and must be able to meet the budget constraints in order to be an ongoing achievable process. Sustainability and maintenance goals are related. Products that are more regional, have a long lifecycle, are durable, require less chemical maintenance, and fit the sustainability and the maintenance goals. Indoor air quality goals are closely connected to patient safety. VOC emissions can have a very detrimental impact on patient and staff health, an important consideration with both the finishes and furnishings selection process.

Other patient safety issues include understanding the implications of fire ratings and ADA concerns for various areas within a health facility, and selecting appropriate products for various clinical uses. Products that are suitable for a public lobby may not be suitable for a patient or clinical area.

Reflected Ceiling Plan (RCP) is a way in which designers can communicate ceiling details to help aid in wayfinding, provide acoustic properties and add elevated atmospheres within our four walled structure.

Lighting can be critical aspect in design. Here we chose fixture that house LED bulbs & are UL listed to ensure sustainable & safe use.

Brookings Dental Complex |Entry Video Walkthrough

The entry to a space is often the most important because it allows users to gain their first impression of the environment directly impacting a persons experience. For this reason, it was essential that we integrated clean aesthetics, open organizational flow & signage attributes to aid in wayfinding.

This walkthrough captures the centralized reception desk & coffee bar with a view through our very own "main street." This axial progression cuts through the building and aids in circulation and wayfinding. Other features include a green wall to promote health, a dentist wall for users to get to know their dentists & ease any nerves or stress, and photos of Brookings for a contextual connection to the local area.

Pediatrics Waiting Room_Lightened.png

This is the pediatric waiting area located just off the main drag to account for acoustic considerations. A specialized ceiling element was implemented over the three different desk heights (for inclusivity of age ranges) to create a sense of place. Other elements include a tent area for shy/scared kiddos considering the dentist might not be the most favored of places & a glass wall pointing back to nature for a biomimic approach

Brookings Dental Complex |Orthodontics Perspective

This is a perspective of the orthodontic area featuring an open workflow concept. Adjacent to the bays you’ll find a tooth brushing station with roll-unders to account for ADA standards. Cabinetry was implemented for abundant storage & specialty diagonal lighting was implemented to get users excited about being in their environment.

Views to the exterior were maximized leading to a healthier work environment and more pleasurable patient experiences. This also maximized daylight, ultimately saving on energy cost - leaning towards a more sustainable solution.

Pops of monochromatic blues, angles, and signage for wayfinding was infused to ensure patient confidence when navigating through this space. Elevated ceiling features were implemented to add greater user experience. Rooms received maximized daylight & views to the exterior. Upon request, the room was to have two entry points for staff usability.

Brookings Dental Complex |General Dentistry Perspective

Here is a perspective of one of the periodontic patient rooms. Elevated ceiling features were infused with technology and implemented to add greater user experience. Biophilic walls were implemented to aid in relaxation and promote health. All patient rooms received maximized daylight & views to the exterior. They also feature roll-under cabinetry mirrored in all rooms to ensure easy workflow.

Brookings Dental Complex |Shared Staff Break Area

Here is a perspective of the shared staff area. An elevated ceiling experience was added over the kitchenette and lockers to create a sense of place. Cabinetry and appliances were doubled to account for busy lunch hour time crunches & entertainment was provided on walls adjacent to seating. Located just outside the doors and to the right the staff patio can be found adjacent to the staff parking lot.
