NEXT HUB
PROJECT DESCRIPTION|
Over a ten week period this Steelcase National Competition challenged young professionals to create an extension of "NEXT University" called "NEXT Hub." The program requirements included two levels of a building in the old downtown area of Washington DC. The clients desired flexibility, diversity, and interaction within the building - along with the inclusion of Steelcase furniture.

The Learning Commons were to incorporate a range of settings to support social connections, project teams, peer to peer or faculty/student interactions and individual focus study/work. To reinforce "The NEXT Vintage Era" a tin ceiling and eclectic furniture was chosen.
Perspective One|Learning Commons
The Tutoring area required three rooms and an open collaborative space for students to meet with instructors and other students to learn and mentor. The space planning of this was crucial to my design - I added additional walls to make this space feel more private.
Perspective Two|Open Tutoring
The Breakout areas were to be placed by the classrooms for a stopping point for students to work before and after classes. This perspective of the booth breakout shows the relationship between it and the Makerspace classroom across from it.
Perspective Three|Breakout
The Active Learning Classroom's goal was to create an active learning environment that drives student engagement and supports blended learning. Things to provide included digital tools, flexibility, a variety of postures and control over learning modes.
Perspective Four|Active Learning
The Makerspace's goal was to create a hands-on light-scale fabrication classroom where students can learn from the process of creativity and design thinking with affordances that encourage thinking, making and sharing.
Perspective Five|Makerspace
The Large Active Multi-purpose Classroom's requirements included creating a large active learning classroom for 50-60 students which can also be used as a multi-purpose room for larger group gatherings and after-hours programs.
Perspective Six|Large Active Multipurpose
Within the program requirements students had the freedom to create a wild card space. My wild card space included a counseling area, a meditation area, and a recreation space. The focus of these was physical, mental, and emotional health. The Recreation Area highlights more study areas, a lounge area around the tv and fireplace and a ping pong table to encourage movement throughout the space.
